I was born in Penzance, Cornwall in 1971. As well as Cornwall I have lived in Leeds and Oxfordshire. After attending life classes at the St Ives School of Painting and various artist-based workshops, I joined Cornwall College to study for an Fda in Fine Art Practice. My work develops from ideas of escape into the local natural areas - beaches and woods - and also the safety of home. A parallel theme is that of facing difficulties and turning them into something positive. I have used my experience with the lung condition Primary Cilary Dyskenesia, which affects me considerably, to inform my work. Completing a site-based project for Tehidy woods, where I regularly stayed in hospital as a child, the tree emerged as a strong and recurring symbol in my art. The tree is an international symbol, yet personal to so many of us, representing growth, power, strength, fertility and much more. Inspired by the way in which nature employs strategies to continue its path in the face of adversity, I take this as philosophy towards life every day. I like to use re-cycled materials whenever possible. Using diverse mediums and materials - from sculpture to writing, photography to painting - I work intuitively with what I have chosen, to let the material shape the work. As an emerging artist I aim to make my work affordable, to enable more people to own and enjoy original pieces in their own homes.
